Outdoor signage IP ratings apply to the specific component and configuration that was tested. Each rating describes water resistance under declared test conditions, not unlimited waterproofing, and a rating on one part does not extend automatically to your installed sign.
What IP65 means. The tested component resisted dust ingress and water jets under defined lab conditions.
What it does not mean. Unlimited weatherproofing, submersion resistance, or automatic coverage of the whole assembly once installed.
What to verify. Which components were tested, under what conditions, and whether that evidence covers your configuration.

Why This Question Matters to You
"Waterproof" gets used loosely in this industry, and that is where disappointment starts. A buyer assumes full protection. Then condensation appears inside a light box, or an LED section dies after one rainy season. This guide gives you the questions to ask.
Understanding Outdoor Signage IP Ratings
An IP rating has two digits, and each answers a different question under IEC 60529. The first runs 0 to 6 and rates protection against solids and dust. A 6 means fully dust-tight. The second runs 0 to 9 and rates protection against water. A 5 means the tested unit withstood water jets from a specified nozzle, flow rate, distance and duration in a lab. It does not cover every kind of rain, wind-driven spray or pressure washing in the field.
You will also see IP69K on datasheets. That designation sits in a different standard family, not in IEC 60529. Ask which standard and edition the report cites before you treat a high-digit rating as comparable.

IPX7 and IPX8 are not interchangeable, and neither extends to your installed sign unless the evidence covers that enclosure. IP65 is the rating you see most often on outdoor sign components. Treat it as a starting point for a project-specific risk assessment. A fixture that could sit in standing water needs a submersion-rated component instead.



The Whole Sign Versus Individual Components
A sign is an assembly, and its real-world protection depends on the weakest link. A component rating on the LED module does not transfer to the finished assembly by default. Ask what the supplier's evidence covers. That evidence may be a test on a representative assembly, or a controlled design family supported by technical documentation, rather than a test of every unit. Either can be legitimate. A single module datasheet is not. When comparing outdoor signage IP ratings, confirm whether the evidence covers the finished enclosure or only one component.

How We Manage Water Ingress
Water resistance is a set of manufacturing decisions, not a single coating. We seal seams and joints during assembly and treat cable entries with a waterproof gland or potting compound. We insulate connections to limit moisture tracking, apply waterproof adhesive at panel joints, and build in a drainage path so water that passes a seal can exit.
Depending on the product line, configurations may use 12 V or 24 V LED modules with sealed protection. Confirm the order-specific electrical specification, driver placement, earthing and wiring method against your local electrical code.
Three Kinds of Testing, Often Confused
Keep these apart when a supplier shows you a report.
- Design or type verification happens once for a product design. IP and compliance reports are tied to this.
- In-process control runs during production, checking material, dimensions and workmanship.
- Order or batch acceptance applies to your run. It may be standard, sampled, or a paid witnessed test.
A design-verification report from years ago tells you nothing about the batch shipping next month.
Our published process includes a 48-hour power-on aging test, a 15 to 30 minute water spray test on glue joints, wire outlets and panel bonding positions, and a full-load power supply test run for four consecutive hours. We can supply a redacted sample report on request, and batch-specific records when their scope is agreed in the quotation or inspection plan.
Condensation Is a Different Problem From Leaks
A sign can develop moisture inside it without any seal failing. Day-to-night temperature swings make the air inside a sealed housing expand and contract. If that air carries enough moisture, it condenses on the housing or lens once the surface cools below the dew point.
That is a ventilation problem, not an ingress problem, and a high IP rating does not prevent it. Manufacturers manage it with drainage paths and breather vents or membranes that let vapour escape without admitting liquid water. So ask how your enclosure handles internal humidity, not only how it is sealed against the outside. A sign sealed perfectly against rain can still fog up or corrode internally when trapped moisture has nowhere to go.

Outdoor Signage Installation Affects Water Resistance Too
A correctly rated sign still leaks if the installation is wrong. Wall penetrations for cables need their own sealant, sized for the cable and grommet. Junction boxes must sit where they will not collect standing water, with cable entries facing downward where possible. An indoor-rated driver in an exposed enclosure defeats a well-rated sign. Fixings through the housing need sealing at the penetration, not only at the factory seams.
Illuminated signage can trigger electrical, building, fire and permitting rules that vary by city and country. What we describe here is product guidance, not an engineering sign-off. Confirm requirements with your installer and, where needed, a licensed electrician or code official in your market.

Confirm this split and your warranty terms in writing before you install. The table is a starting point, not your contract. Then check periodically for seal aging or cracking at joints and cable entries, and for water pooling after rain. Catching a degraded seal early is a maintenance visit. Catching it late is a replacement.

What should I confirm first when comparing IP ratings between suppliers?
Confirm the rating at component level for the LED module, power supply and connectors, not one number on the product page. Then ask whether the evidence covers your mounting method and cable routing.
Does a higher second digit always mean better protection?
No. IPX7 and IPX8 describe immersion, a different exposure from the water jets covered by IPX5. A higher digit does not prove better performance against wind-driven rain. Match the rating to your exposure.
How should I adjust the spec for a coastal or rooftop site?
Tell your supplier the exact environment and ask which materials, seals or extra tests apply. A standard outdoor spec does not cover every climate, and a lab spray test is not the same evidence as a wind-driven rain test.
Does an IP65 component make my finished sign IP65?
